O MPPM responsabiliza Israel e seus cúmplices pela catástrofe alimentar em Gaza

O MPPM considera que a fome que assola a Faixa de Gaza é uma catástrofe inteiramente devida a decisões do Estado de Israel, é o resultado directo e deliberado de uma política sistemática de punição colectiva, é parte integrante do genocídio que o Estado sionista está a levar a cabo.

Gaza é o único território do mundo em que toda a população enfrenta níveis extremos de insegurança alimentar.

De maneira intencional, Israel destruiu infra-estruturas civis essenciais à sobrevivência da população: padarias, armazéns de alimentos, instalações de dessalinização de água, hospitais, escolas e centros de distribuição de ajuda, a rede eléctrica e de transportes. Violando de forma gritante o direito internacional humanitário, Israel impõe um bloqueio total à entrada de alimentos, combustível, medicamentos e água potável. A consequência directa e propositada desta política é a fome em massa. 

A Agência das Nações Unidas de Assistência aos Refugiados da Palestina (UNRWA), historicamente responsável por grande parte da distribuição de alimentos, foi impedida por Israel de operar na Faixa de Gaza, comprometendo gravemente a assistência a mais de um milhão de pessoas que dependem desses serviços para sobreviver. 

Ao invés, os centros de distribuição da chamada “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation”, cinicamente apresentada por Israel e pelos EUA como um mecanismo de ajuda alternativa, constituem na realidade, tal como tem sido denunciado pelos palestinos e por organizações de direitos humanos, uma armadilha mortal para multidões de pessoas desesperadas que procuram obter alimentos para as suas famílias. Um milhar de palestinos foram já mortos pelas balas israelitas nesses pontos de distribuição.

A fome causa um sofrimento físico extremo e conduz a uma morte silenciosa. Centenas de pessoas, especialmente crianças, pereceram já, vítimas desta política cruel. As consequências desta política são devastadoras. A desnutrição severa das crianças compromete o futuro de gerações.

O uso da fome como arma de guerra é uma forma de punição colectiva condenada pelo direito internacional. Configura, segundo numerosos especialistas, um crime de guerra. A fome em Gaza é uma política de extermínio deliberado, que continua de forma particularmente inumana a política de limpeza étnica prosseguida desde sempre por Israel, e que se manifesta também na anunciada intenção da construção de uma «cidade humanitária», na verdade, um gigantesco campo de concentração para centenas de milhares de pessoas, antecâmara para a sua expulsão.

Perante um crime desta magnitude, a passividade não pode ser uma opção. Os autores do crime e os seus cúmplices têm de ser responsabilizados.

É intolerável a inacção, e pior ainda a cumplicidade de que Israel continua a gozar por parte dos Estados Unidos da América, da União Europeia e de diversos países «ocidentais».

É ultrajante que os chefes da diplomacia da UE tenham, uma vez mais, recusado suspender o Acordo de Associação com Israel com o pretexto — em que nem os próprios devem acreditar — de que Israel se compromete a expandir a ajuda humanitária em Gaza.

É inaceitável que o governo português, não obstante as provas avassaladoras dos crimes cometidos por Israel, continue a recusar tirar as necessárias ilações para a sua relação com o Estado-pária de Israel. 

Não é mais aceitável que os Estados se refugiem em fúteis apelos e declarações — como a Declaração de Bissau da CPLP, um exemplo perfeito de hipocrisia diplomática — em vez de assumirem que é imperioso sancionar Israel pelos seus crimes. 

Neste momento, o MPPM sublinha a urgência do fim imediato do bloqueio a Gaza, a urgência do cessar-fogo total e permanente, a urgência da entrada irrestrita da ajuda humanitária, sob a coordenação das Nações Unidas.

MPPM holds Israel and its accomplices responsible for the food catastrophe in Gaza

MPPM considers that the famine ravaging the Gaza Strip is a catastrophe entirely due to decisions made by the State of Israel. It is the direct and deliberate result of a systematic policy of collective punishment and is an integral part of the genocide being carried out by the Zionist state.

Gaza is the only territory in the world where the entire population faces extreme levels of food insecurity.

Israel has intentionally destroyed civilian infrastructure essential to the survival of the population: bakeries, food warehouses, water desalination facilities, hospitals, schools, aid distribution centres, the electricity grid, and transportation networks. In flagrant violation of international humanitarian law, Israel imposes a total blockade on the entry of food, fuel, medicine, and drinking water. The direct and deliberate consequence of this policy is mass starvation. 

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), historically responsible for much of the food distribution, has been prevented by Israel from operating in the Gaza Strip, seriously compromising assistance to more than one million people who depend on these services for their survival. 

Instead, the distribution centres of the so-called “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation”, cynically presented by Israel and the US as an alternative aid mechanism, are in reality, as has been denounced by Palestinians and human rights organizations, a deadly trap for crowds of desperate people seeking food for their families. A thousand Palestinians have already been killed by Israeli bullets at these distribution points.

Hunger causes extreme physical suffering and leads to a silent death. Hundreds of people, especially children, have already perished as victims of this cruel policy. The consequences of this policy are devastating. Severe malnutrition in children compromises the future of generations.

The use of hunger as a weapon of war is a form of collective punishment condemned by international law. According to numerous experts, it constitutes a war crime. The famine in Gaza is a policy of deliberate extermination, which continues in a particularly inhumane way the policy of ethnic cleansing that Israel has always pursued, and which is also manifested in the announced intention to build a “humanitarian city”, in reality a gigantic concentration camp for hundreds of thousands of people, a waiting room for their expulsion.

In the face of a crime of this magnitude, passivity cannot be an option. The perpetrators of the crime and their accomplices must be held accountable.

Inaction is intolerable, and even worse is the complicity that Israel continues to enjoy from the United States of America, the European Union, and various “Western” countries.

It is outrageous that EU foreign ministers have once again refused to suspend the Association Agreement with Israel on the pretext—which even they cannot believe—that Israel is committed to expanding humanitarian aid in Gaza.

It is unacceptable that the Portuguese government, despite overwhelming evidence of the crimes committed by Israel, continues to refuse to draw the necessary conclusions for its relationship with the pariah state of Israel. 

It is no longer acceptable for states to take refuge in futile appeals and declarations — such as the CPLP's Bissau Declaration, a perfect example of diplomatic hypocrisy — instead of acknowledging that it is imperative to sanction Israel for its crimes. 

At this moment, the MPPM stresses the urgency of an immediate end to the blockade of Gaza, the urgency of a total and permanent ceasefire, and the urgency of unrestricted access for humanitarian aid, under the coordination of the United Nations. 

Gaza cannot wait any longer!
