MPPM diz não ao branqueamento desportivo de Israel: a equipa Israel Premier Tech não é bem-vinda à Volta ao Alentejo

O MPPM repudia a participação na Volta ao Alentejo em bicicleta, que se inicia em Beja nesta quarta-feira 26, da equipa Israel Premier Tech, constituída para servir a propaganda israelita de branqueamento das acusações de genocídio, de apartheid e de generalizado desrespeito pelo direito internacional.

Criado em 2014, como Academia de Ciclismo de Israel, o projecto tinha o meritório propósito de desenvolver o desporto no país formando jovens talentosos. Mas, a breve prazo, com a entrada do multimilionário israelo-canadiano Sylvan Adams, o projecto rapidamente evoluiu para o que é hoje — um instrumento do branqueamento desportivo de Israel. 

Na equipa que compete nas grandes provas internacionais, só quatro dos vinte ciclistas são israelitas; os restantes são de outras onze nacionalidades, incluindo um português. O dinheiro de Sylvan Adams e os subsídios do Turismo de Israel permitiram a contratação, nomeadamente, de Chris Froome — quatro vezes vencedor da Volta à França — e de outros ciclistas consagrados como Alessandro De Marchi, Michael Woods, Daryl Impey e Sep Vanmarcke.

Em 2018, numa operação que o MPPM denunciou na altura, Sylvan Adams assegurou a «Grande Partenza» do Giro d’Italia para Jerusalém por uns estimados 9 milhões de libras. Isto permitiu-lhe obter um «wild card» para a participação no Giro da sua equipa, que só em 2020 viria a obter a licença «World Tour» atribuída pela União Ciclista Internacional (UCI) e que permite a participação de direito nas grandes competições internacionais.

Mas enquanto os ciclistas israelitas carimbavam o seu passaporte para Itália, Alaa al-Dali, um ciclista de 21 anos da equipa de ciclismo da Palestina, que iria participar nos Jogos Asiáticos no Verão desse ano, viu o seu futuro desportivo destruído, no dia 30 de Março, pelas 14 horas, quando um atirador especial do exército israelita o alvejou na perna quando se encontrava sozinho a observar uma manifestação perto de Rafah. Para lhe salvar a vida os médicos tiveram de lhe amputar a perna. Agora, al-Dali compete em provas de para-ciclismo.

Adams, citado pelo The Guardian, insiste que a Israel Premier-Tech é apolítica e não um projecto governamental, embora receba financiamento — uma «quantia lamentavelmente pequena», diz ele — do organismo nacional de turismo. «Aqui em Israel, somos vistos como uma zona de guerra, como se estivéssemos num estado de conflito», disse Adams. «Queremos que a equipa ajude a contar a história de que não se ouve falar muitas vezes.» Ron Baron, o outro co-proprietário da equipa, descreve a iniciativa como uma forma de «diplomacia desportiva». De acordo com Guy Niv, um dos poucos ciclistas israelitas da equipa e antigo atirador do exército, todos os ciclistas compreendem que «estando numa equipa israelita, são embaixadores do país».

Dos organismos que tutelam o desporto internacional pouco se pode esperar e a UCI não escapa à regra. Afirmando-se «politicamente neutra», recusa-se a tirar consequências dos crimes de guerra e crimes contra a humanidade cometidos por Israel. Embora a sua alegada neutralidade política não seja particularmente consistente…

Numa altura em que Israel rompeu o cessar-fogo em Gaza — cessar-fogo que, verdadeiramente, nunca respeitou — e em que a contagem de vítimas palestinas, em Gaza e na Cisjordânia, não pára de crescer, é afrontoso, para quem tenha um mínimo de sentido de humanidade, ver uma legião estrangeira de ciclistas, agindo como «embaixadores» de Israel, a percorrer as estradas do Alentejo.

Vamos dizer-lhes que não são bem-vindos.

MPPM says no to Israel's sportswashing: the Israel Premier Tech team is not welcome at the Volta ao Alentejo

The MPPM rejects the participation in the Volta ao Alentejo cycling race, which starts in Beja on Wednesday 26, of the Israel Premier Tech team which was set up to serve Israeli propaganda to whitewash accusations of genocide, apartheid and generalised disrespect for international law.

Created in 2014 as the Israel Cycling Academy, the project had the worthy purpose of developing sport in the country by training talented young people. But soon, with the entry of Israeli-Canadian multi-millionaire Sylvan Adams, the project quickly evolved into what it is today — an instrument of Israel's sportswashing. 

In the team that competes in major international races, only four of the twenty cyclists are Israeli; the rest are of eleven other nationalities, including one Portuguese. Sylvan Adams' money and subsidies from Israel Tourism have enabled the hiring of Chris Froome — a four-time winner of the Tour de France — and other established cyclists such as Alessandro De Marchi, Michael Woods, Daryl Impey and Sep Vanmarcke.

In 2018, in an operation that the MPPM denounced at the time, Sylvan Adams secured the ‘Grande Partenza’ of the Giro d'Italia for Jerusalem for an estimated £9 million. This allowed him to obtain a ‘wild card’ for his team's participation in the Giro, which wouldn't obtain until 2020 the ‘World Tour’ licence awarded by the International Cycling Union (UCI), which allows them to participate in major international competitions by right.

But while the Israeli cyclists were stamping their passports to Italy, Alaa al-Dali, a 21-year-old cyclist from the Palestinian cycling team who was going to take part in the Asian Games in the summer of that year, saw his sporting future destroyed on 30 March at 2pm when an Israeli army sniper shot him in the leg while he was alone watching a demonstration near Rafah. Doctors had to amputate his leg to save his life. Now, al-Dali competes in para-cycling events.

Adams, quoted by The Guardian, insists that Israel Premier-Tech is apolitical and not a government project, although it does receive funding - a ‘pitifully small amount’, he says - from the national tourism organisation. ‘Here in Israel, we're seen as a war zone, as if we're in a state of conflict,’ said Adams. ‘We want the team to help tell the story that you don't often hear about.’ Ron Baron, the team's other co-owner, describes the initiative as a form of ‘sports diplomacy’. According to Guy Niv, one of the few Israeli cyclists on the team and a former army sniper, all the cyclists realise that ‘being on an Israeli team, they are ambassadors for the country’.

Little can be expected from the organisations that oversee international sport, and the UCI is no exception. Claiming to be ‘politically neutral’, it refuses to draw any consequences from the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by Israel. Although its alleged political neutrality is not particularly consistent...

At a time when Israel has broken the ceasefire in Gaza — a ceasefire it has never really respected — and when the Palestinian casualty count in Gaza and the West Bank keeps growing, it is an affront for anyone with the slightest sense of humanity to see a foreign legion of cyclists, acting as “ambassadors” for Israel, travelling the roads of the Alentejo.

Let's tell them they're not welcome.
