MPPM alerta que ataque dos EUA ao Irão constitui escalada gravíssima da guerra desencadeada por Israel

O MPPM – Movimento pelos Direitos do Povo Palestino e pela Paz no Médio Oriente – condena veementemente o ataque militar esta noite levado a cabo pelos Estados Unidos contra o Irão. Trata-se de uma escalada gravíssima da guerra desencadeada pela agressão israelita no passado dia 13. 

Este ataque constitui uma violação flagrante do direito internacional e da soberania do Irão, agravando de forma dramática a tensão na região e contribuindo para um cenário de potencial guerra generalizada a todo o Médio Oriente, com consequências imprevisíveis para os povos da região e do mundo.

Com esta acção os Estados Unidos põem definitivamente a descoberto o seu papel de apoio incondicional a Israel e assumem-se como parte activa no conflito. Torna-se cada vez mais claro que o objectivo do governo de extrema-direita de Israel ao desencadear esta guerra era arrastar directamente para ela os Estados Unidos, visando no fundo não o programa nuclear iraniano mas sim uma «mudança de regime». 

É de sublinhar também que estavam a decorrer conversações entre os Estados Unidos e o Irão sobre o programa nuclear deste país, que foram interrompidas precisamente pela agressão israelita. E não é demais recordar que o Irão era parte de um acordo sobre o seu programa nuclear – o Plano de Acção Conjunto Global (PACG) – que estava a cumprir mas de que os EUA se retiraram e de que a Europa se afastou em silêncio.

A cumplicidade das ditas «potências ocidentais» com Israel, expressa no silêncio, na complacência ou mesmo na justificação destas agressões, torna-as co-responsáveis por essas agressões e pelos sofrimentos impostos aos povos do Médio Oriente pela acção belicista e genocida de Israel. 

É particularmente alarmante que estas potências condenem uma eventual possibilidade de o Irão vir a adquirir armas nucleares — o que as inspecções internacionais não confirmam — e ao mesmo tempo finjam ignorar o facto de Israel ser o único Estado da região a possuir armamento nuclear, sem jamais ter subscrito o Tratado de Não-Proliferação Nuclear, recusando sistematicamente a qualquer forma de controlo ou inspecção internacional.

O MPPM considera inadmissível a atitude do Governo português, que, face a este novo acto de agressão, começa por condenar implicitamente o agredido, apela à «contenção» mas se abstém de condenar os agressores — Israel e os Estados Unidos —, o que não pode deixar de ser interpretado como alinhamento objectivo com estes. O MPPM reclama do Governo uma política externa fiel à Constituição da República Portuguesa, ao direito internacional e aos valores da paz e da justiça.

Deste modo, o MPPM reclama que Portugal condene pública e inequivocamente o ataque dos EUA e de Israel ao Irão e reafirme o primado do direito internacional e da Carta das Nações Unidas.

É igualmente urgente que o Governo português esclareça as notícias segundo as quais a Base das Lajes, nos Açores, poderá estar a ser utilizada pelos EUA como plataforma logística para o fornecimento de armamento a Israel, o que, a confirmar-se, implicaria uma gravíssima responsabilidade de Portugal.

O MPPM sublinha que aquilo que está em jogo neste momento é, nomeadamente, uma ordem internacional guiada pelo Direito Internacional e pela Carta das Nações Unidas ou, em alternativa, a perversão definitiva dessa ordem e a admissão de um mundo onde rege apenas a violência e a lei do mais forte.

O MPPM recorda que a agressão ao Irão ocorre num contexto em que Israel continua a levar a cabo, na Palestina e particularmente em Gaza, uma campanha de limpeza étnica e de extermínio que já matou dezenas de milhares de civis palestinos, num verdadeiro genocídio cometido à vista do mundo, que é urgente travar e não pode ser ocultado pela guerra contra o Irão.

É também sintomático que a agressão de Israel ao Irão, agora secundada pela agressão dos EUA, surja na véspera da reunião dos MNE da UE para analisar o Acordo de Associação UE-Israel pois que, quando tudo indicava que se votaria pela sua suspensão, surgem agora vozes a propor o adiamento (mais um) da decisão. por «solidariedade com o país em guerra».

O MPPM reafirma a sua solidariedade com os povos do Médio Oriente que lutam pela soberania, pela autodeterminação e pela paz.

MPPM warns that US attack on Iran constitutes a serious escalation of the war unleashed by Israel

The MPPM – Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and Peace in the Middle East – strongly condemns tonight's military attack by the United States against Iran. This is a serious escalation of the war unleashed by Israeli aggression on the 13th instant. 

This attack constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and of Iran's sovereignty, dramatically aggravating tension in the region and contributing to a scenario of potential widespread war throughout the Middle East, with unpredictable consequences for the peoples of the region and the world.

With this action, the United States has definitively revealed its role of unconditional support for Israel and has taken an active part in the conflict. It is becoming increasingly clear that the aim of Israel's far-right government in unleashing this war was to drag the United States directly into it, targeting not Iran's nuclear programme but a “regime change”. 

It should also be noted that talks were underway between the United States and Iran on the latter's nuclear programme, which were interrupted precisely by the Israeli aggression. And it is worth remembering that Iran was party to an agreement on its nuclear programme – the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – which it was complying with, but from which the US withdrew and Europe quietly distanced itself.

The complicity of the so-called “western powers” with Israel, expressed in their silence, complacency or even justification of these attacks, makes them jointly responsible for these attacks and for the suffering imposed on the peoples of the Middle East by Israel's warmongering and genocidal actions. 

It is particularly alarming that these powers condemn the possibility of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons — which international inspections do not confirm — while at the same time pretending to ignore the fact that Israel is the only state in the region to possess nuclear weapons, without ever having signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and systematically refusing any form of international control or inspection.

The MPPM considers the attitude of the Portuguese Government to be unacceptable. Faced with this new act of aggression, it begins by implicitly condemning the victim, calls for ‘restraint’ but refrains from condemning the aggressors — Israel and the United States — which can only be interpreted as objective alignment with them. The MPPM demands that the Government pursue a foreign policy that is compliant with the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, international law and the values of peace and justice.

The MPPM therefore demands that Portugal publicly and unequivocally condemn the attack by the US and Israel on Iran and reaffirm the primacy of international law and the United Nations Charter.

It is also urgent that the Portuguese Government clarify reports that the Lajes Base in the Azores may be used by the US as a logistics platform for supplying weapons to Israel, which, if confirmed, would imply a very serious responsibility on the part of Portugal.

The MPPM stresses that what is at stake at this moment is namely an international order guided by international law and the United Nations Charter or, alternatively, the definitive perversion of that order and the acceptance of a world where only violence and the law of the strongest prevail.

The MPPM recalls that the aggression against Iran is taking place in a context in which Israel continues to carry out, in Palestine and particularly in Gaza, a campaign of ethnic cleansing and extermination that has already killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, in a real genocide committed in full view of the world, which must be stopped urgently and cannot be concealed by the war against Iran.

It is also symptomatic that Israel's aggression against Iran, now seconded by US aggression, comes on the eve of the EU Foreign Ministers' meeting to review the EU-Israel Association Agreement, because, when everything indicated that it would be voted to suspend it, voices are now emerging proposing (yet another) postponement of the decision out of ‘solidarity with the country at war’.

The MPPM reaffirms its solidarity with the peoples of the Middle East who are fighting for sovereignty, self-determination and peace.
