Acordo de cessar-fogo em Gaza é um passo positivo mas manifestamente insuficiente

O Movimento pelos Direitos do Povo Palestino e pela Paz no Médio Oriente (MPPM), ao tomar conhecimento do acordo sobre Gaza agora anunciado entre a resistência palestina e Israel, considera positivo qualquer passo no sentido do alívio do sofrimento do povo palestino, após dois anos de genocídio e de destruições inauditas. 

Trata-se agora de garantir que o acordo assegura um cessar-fogo permanente, o acesso efectivo e irrestrito da ajuda humanitária, o fim da agressão e a retirada das tropas israelitas.

Não basta a assinatura do acordo: é indispensável que Israel seja forçado a cumpri-lo, já que é bem conhecido que o regime sionista viola sistematicamente os acordos assinados, como ainda recentemente aconteceu com o acordo de Janeiro de 2025 e como tinha acontecido com os Acordos de Oslo. 

Este acordo, ainda que insuficiente, é o resultado da firme e persistente resistência do povo palestino, do crescimento da mobilização internacional de solidariedade e do cada vez maior isolamento político e diplomático de Israel. 

Como é público, a acção dos Estados Unidos foi decisiva para a concretização do acordo. Cabe perguntar por que razão não actuaram mais cedo, evitando sofrimentos, destruições, milhares de vidas ceifadas. Na realidade, tal facto só vem sublinhar mais uma vez que só o apoio dos EUA — e também de outros países ocidentais e da UE — permitiu que Israel prosseguisse a sua política criminosa, não só durante estes dois anos mas ao longo de décadas. 

O presente acordo não é a paz a que a Palestina aspira e que merece. Não se pode esquecer que a ocupação permanece e se intensifica nos outros territórios palestinos ocupados, a Cisjordânia e Jerusalém Oriental.

A paz real e duradoura só será possível com a plena realização dos direitos nacionais imprescritíveis do povo palestino, com um Estado da Palestina com as fronteiras anteriores a 1967 e com Jerusalém Oriental como capital; o direito de retorno dos refugiados; o fim da ocupação, da colonização e do apartheid; a libertação de todos os presos. 

O MPPM alerta ainda que para a concretização de uma paz justa e duradoura na Palestina e no Médio Oriente é condição indispensável que Israel não possa continuar a sua política de provocação e agressão contra outros países da região, nomeadamente a Síria, o Líbano, o Iémen e o Irão

Neste momento delicado da vida do povo palestino, é necessário reafirmar: a paz só será possível respeitando a vontade desse próprio povo.

O MPPM apela à intensificação das acções de solidariedade com o povo palestino, e nomeadamente no quadro da Campanha de Solidariedade com o Povo Palestino — Todos pela Palestina! Fim ao genocídio! Fim à ocupação!, que está em curso por todo o país e terá o seu culminar no dia 29 de Novembro, com manifestações nacionais no Porto e em Lisboa. 

O MPPM reitera a sua solidariedade de sempre à luta do povo palestino por uma Palestina livre, independente e soberana.

Ceasefire agreement in Gaza is a positive but clearly insufficient step

The Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and for Peace in the Middle East (MPPM), having taken note of the agreement on Gaza now announced between the Palestinian resistance and Israel, considers any step towards alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people, after two years of genocide and unprecedented destruction, to be positive. 

It is now a question of ensuring that the agreement guarantees a permanent ceasefire, effective and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid, an end to aggression and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.

Signing the agreement is not enough: it is essential that Israel be forced to comply with it, as it is well known that the Zionist regime systematically violates signed agreements, as was the more recently the case with the January 2025 agreement and as was the case with the Oslo Accords.

This agreement, although insufficient, is the result of the firm and persistent resistance of the Palestinian people, the growth of international solidarity and the increasing political and diplomatic isolation of Israel. 

As is well known, the action of the United States was decisive in bringing about the agreement. One might ask why they did not act sooner, thus avoiding suffering, destruction and the loss of thousands of lives. In reality, this only serves to underline once again that it is only the support of the US – and also of other Western countries and the EU – that has allowed Israel to pursue its criminal policy, not only during these two years but over decades. 

The present agreement is not the peace that Palestine aspires to and deserves. It should not be forgotten that the occupation remains and is intensifying in the other occupied Palestinian territories, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Real and lasting peace will only be possible with the full realisation of the inalienable national rights of the Palestinian people, with a State of Palestine with pre-1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital; the right of return for refugees; the end of occupation, colonisation and apartheid; and the release of all prisoners. 

The MPPM also warns that for a just and lasting peace in Palestine and the Middle East to be achieved, it is essential that Israel cannot continue its policy of provocation and aggression against other countries in the region, namely Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Iran.

At this delicate moment in the life of the Palestinian people, it is necessary to reaffirm that peace will only be possible by respecting the will of the Palestinian people themselves.

The MPPM calls for the intensification of solidarity actions with the Palestinian people, particularly within the framework of the Campaign of Solidarity with the Palestinian People — All for Palestine! End the genocide! End the occupation!, which is underway throughout the country and will culminate on 29 November with national demonstrations in Porto and Lisbon.

The MPPM reiterates its longstanding solidarity with the Palestinian people's struggle for a free, independent and sovereign Palestine.
